It’s fascinating to consider the connection between two renowned American authors with such distinct writing styles. The link between Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen Crane was first noted by another literary giant, Willa Cather. At the age of 21, Cather met the 23-year-old Crane in Lincoln, Nebraska, and observed that Crane was carrying a copy of Poe’s short stories. Both Poe and Crane were incredibly prolific, producing a significant body of work during their relatively short lives. Poe passed away at the age of 40 in 1849, while Crane died at the young age of 28, a half-century later.
On “Mischief Night” at the Stephen Crane House, Frank D’Alessandro will continue his tradition of Edgar Allan Poe readings to celebrate both the Halloween season and Stephen Crane’s 154th birthday.
The readings will be two gruesome short stories by Edgar Allan Poe:
- The Tell-Tale Heart
- The Cask of Amontillado
For those who dare to remain after the readings, there will be a screening of I Married a Witch with Veronica Lake and Fredric March.
Refreshments in keeping with the Halloween season will be provided, along with a birthday cake in honor of Stephen Crane.
